Transfer price... what's your worth?
Michael Page’s south Manchester-based Michelle Barker, reveals how footballer Cristiano Ronaldo can inspire us all
‘His contribution has been a major factor in the club’s success in that time and his talent, his ability to entertain and his infectious personality have enthralled fans the world over’. Sir Alex Ferguson reflects upon the cause and effect of Cristiano Ronaldo’s successes during his 6 year development at Old Trafford, resulting in an £80m world record breaking transfer this summer and the accolade of ‘the world’s best player’.
Yet if we look passed the media coverage, put his earnings and celebrity status to one side for a moment and we are able to see that, like millions of us, Ronaldo is doing a job. Like all professions, when applied with the highest of aspirations, requires commitment, pragmatism and an appetite to succeed.
Whilst there is no disguising the fact that the UK is in the heart of recession, this by no means prevents you, the part qualified accountant, from preparing for your future successes.
All too often our countries current economic constraints leave us assuming our glass is half empty rather than half full, and as a result we fail to see the variety of opportunities sat right under our own noses.
Whilst our role as recruitment consultants is, as it should be, to provide an objective guiding hand in the search for your next career move, emphasis must be placed in your ability to develop skills of both a life and professional nature.
To increase your transfer value within today’s market place ask yourself what can you do? How do you secure that all important next salary increase? How do you position yourself now for future long term career aspirations? Below are 3 basic factors to consider…
Getting a life
It is easy to list some generic hobbies and interests like reading, music and gym when constructing your cv however how does this really separate you from the crowd?
Only very recently, a client alluded to the fact that interests, experiences and personal accomplishments pay a major factor in securing an interview.
If you’ve been travelling, detail it, if you have achieved within a sporting field, detail that, or perhaps you have taken part in Himalayan hike! Whatever it is apply rational and consider logic in presenting the type of person are aspire to be, show the employer who you are as well what you can do.
Speed of qualification
Granted we all lead busy lives, however why put off till tomorrow that can be done today, and get that all important qualification under you belt as soon as possible.
It’s a text book error to tell yourself that you will sit the exams next time round, if Ronaldo had taken that approach to his goal scoring do you think he would command the salary and accolades he now reaps the rewards of?
We all know the answer to that, completing your qualification within the text book 3 year time scale demonstrates commitment, pragmatism and an appetite for your future career successes to every potential employer.
Professional achievements and special projects
At school and further education we are taught that having extra curricular activities on our cv is important, not a truer word has been spoken when it comes to the world of accounting and finance.
Despite the fact that jobs are thinner on the ground and competition for those jobs is as fierce as ever, ask yourself… are you challenging your current employer to assign you greater responsibility?
Are you pushing yourself daily to add value beyond the remit of your current role? What have you achieved, within the realms of your control, which could be substantiated on your cv? You are probably already doing this without realisation of the fact, if you are not then it is crucial you start doing so!
Sir Alex Ferguson cites Ronaldo’s ability, talent and passion, albeit in slightly different terminology (read between the lines if you please), as a major factor in the clubs recent successes.
Without provoking the endless debates of should he stay or should he go, he’s gone, the question is what value did he bring to the team, what did he take away from his 6 years at Old Trafford and what lies ahead for him to conquer?
Apply this mind set to your career in finance & accounting and an escalating transfer price, irrespective of economic conditions, is inevitable.
